Chennimalai is a Selection Grade town panchayat in Perundurai taluk, about twenty-eight kilometres south-west of Erode on the state highway to Dharapuram, in the 638051 PIN code. The town itself is four square kilometres and fifteen wards; the Subramanya Swamy temple stands on the hill above it, some four hundred metres up and reached by over thirteen hundred steps. It is known across Tamil Nadu as the handloom town: cooperatives and private weavers here make bed-sheets and furnishings, and powerlooms have joined the handlooms. Our company shares its name with the town.

The hill is hard rock and the plots nearest it meet that rock close to the surface. It carries a footing well, but excavation is slower, a sump may have to sit elsewhere and blasting near houses and the temple approach is not an option, so the rock is broken by other means. Plots further out are on ordinary ground. We open a trial pit on every site before the foundation is designed and priced.

The weaving villages around it — a few minutes away on the same roads — are village panchayats in Chennimalai block, with a different route and a DTCP layout approval where land has been divided. We confirm which boundary your survey number sits in before drawing, because a file lodged in the wrong office simply waits.
A loom shed is a floor, a power supply and a cool roof
Powerlooms shake, and a slab that is not designed for it cracks within a few years. A loom shed also needs a three-phase supply applied for early, a roof that keeps the heat off the weavers, and a godown that stays dry so finished cloth is not spoiled.
