Ulagadam — Olagadam in the government records — is a panchayat town in Bhavani taluk, about thirty-six kilometres from Erode. It is a compact town of under six square kilometres, and an old one: its Olageshwarar temple dates to the twelfth century.
An old town gives a builder two very different jobs. On the edges it is a new house on an open plot. In the older streets it is a rebuild on a narrow site with neighbours on both sides whose walls were built long before anyone drew a plan.

Approval goes to the town panchayat, which records the town as Olagadam. We make sure the name, survey number and patta all match on the application, because a mismatch there is a common reason files are returned.
